Hi everybody! Molly, with your Bonding Tip of the Week. This week’s bonding tip is: be approachable.
Cats, like I said in a bunch of other bonding tips, prefer choice and control. In fact, they usually don’t accept anything else. If you go up to your cat and say, “Come here, come here, let me pet you,” they don’t always appreciate that. They don’t want you to be in control of that situation; they want to be the ones to decide whether or not it’s time to come and spend time with you and love on you.
Being approachable means making it easy for your cat to choose to spend time with you. That could look like a number of things, but I’ll give you my favorite example. Sit down in your cat’s favorite spot and cozy up with their favorite blanket. When we sit down and watch TV, I put Pico’s favorite blanket on my lap, and I just sit there until he decides he wants to come up and spend time with me. It’s a waiting game, but it’s a worthwhile one.
You can also tempt them with their favorite treats. One of Pico’s favorites is Vitakraft Meaty Morsels. Sit, be approachable, and then say, “I’ve got something for you!” And of course, no cat can resist Meaty Morsels shakin’ in a bag. Works every time.
So, don’t be pushy this week—be approachable. You want to make it easy for them to choose to snuggle with you. Until next time, keep calm, purr on, and have fun bonding with your cat!
