Bonding Tip - Listen… with Your Eyes!

Hi everybody! Molly, with Cat Behavior Solutions, here with your Bonding Tip of the Week. This week’s bonding tip is: listen to your cat. And I’m not talking about what they’re meowing to you!

No, cats communicate primarily through body language, and subtle body language at that. They tell you all sorts of things using every part of their body from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail.

For instance, if they’re happy, their tail will be straight up. If they’re unsure, their tail will be low, and more horizontal to the ground.

And even really subtle communications, like whiskers: when the whiskers are forward, then they’re engaged, and they’re happy, and maybe they’re wanting to play and excited. If the whiskers are back and held tight against their face, then they’re feeling a little unsure about the situation.

Look at the eyes: if their eyes are dilated, that means that they’re scared of something—or excited, sometimes their eyes dilate if they see toys moving around like prey.

So take some time to study cat body language, and listen, with your eyes, to what your cat is telling you this week. So take time to spend with your cat, and pay attention to it closely, and bond with it this week. Until next time, keep calm and purr on.
