Ozempic for Cats? Why GLP-1 Drugs Won’t Fix Feline Obesity Without YOU

Weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have changed human medicine — and now pharmaceutical companies are developing similar GLP-1-based treatments for pets. Early studies, including Okava Pharmaceuticals’ MEOW-1 trial, suggest these medications may help obese cats lose weight or even prevent diabetes. Considering how many cats are euthanized each year after a diabetes diagnosis (most often due to insulin-treatment challenges), it’s no wonder the veterinary world is paying close attention.

But here’s the part many pet owners don’t realize:GLP-1 drugs do not fix the environment that caused the obesity in the first place.

Cats become overweight for the same reasons humans do — diets too high in calories, too many treats, unlimited access to food, boredom, lack of movement, and sometimes underlying medical issues. A medication may temporarily suppress appetite, but once the drug wears off, cats return to their previous intake unless the caregiver has changed the food, the feeding habits, and the level of enrichment and activity.

This is why even in human studies, weight regain is common when GLP-1 drugs are stopped.

So what does this mean for pet guardians?

  • GLP-1 drugs might become a tool for obesity management

  • They might help reduce the risk of diabetes or support remission

  • But they will never replace responsible feeding, behavior-based enrichment, and a healthy daily routine

If you’re considering GLP-1 options for your cat in the future, go in with eyes open: the medication may jump-start weight loss, but only you can maintain it.
