Understimulation Is One of the Biggest Welfare Issues for Indoor Cats

Indoor cats have never been safer, healthier, or lived longer lives. Yet many are missing something just as important as food, water, and veterinary care: opportunities to behave like cats.

Cats evolved as solitary hunters. Long before they caught a meal, they searched, observed, stalked, chased, pounced, captured, ate, groomed, and rested. That hunting sequence isn't simply how cats obtain food—it's how their brains are designed to work.

Today's indoor cats often experience a very different routine. Meals appear in the same bowl twice a day. Favorite sleeping spots never change. Toys sit untouched in baskets. While their physical needs are met, their behavioral needs may be left largely unfulfilled.

Understimulation isn't simply boredom. It's the absence of meaningful opportunities to solve problems, make choices, explore, investigate, and express natural feline behaviors.

One of the most common misconceptions is that a cat who sleeps all day is automatically content. In reality, some cats sleep because there is little else worth doing. Others may spend their time begging for food, following their owners constantly, knocking objects off shelves, overgrooming, or becoming unusually active at night—all potential signs that they are creating stimulation where none exists.

Equally important is understanding the difference between an understimulated cat and a shut-down cat. An understimulated cat still wants to engage with the world but lacks opportunities to do so. A shut-down cat, often the result of chronic fear or overwhelming stress, may have stopped trying altogether. Mistaking withdrawal for relaxation can lead to missed opportunities to improve a cat's welfare.

The good news is that enrichment doesn't have to be expensive. Interactive play that mimics the hunting sequence, food puzzles, hidden treats, vertical climbing opportunities, clicker training, rotating toys, cardboard boxes, paper bags (with the handles removed), and even changing the environment slightly can all encourage curiosity and confidence.

One of the most valuable forms of enrichment is problem-solving. Every time a cat successfully figures something out—whether it's opening a puzzle feeder, locating hidden treats, or learning a new behavior—they gain confidence because they learn that their actions matter.

Instead of asking whether your cat has enough toys, ask a different question:

"Does my cat have opportunities every day to think, choose, hunt, explore, and solve problems?"

Food fills the stomach. Enrichment feeds the brain. A truly healthy indoor life provides both.
