Throw out the box and get a new one as soon as there are scratches in the bottom of the box (usually about every 6 months.) These scratches are collecting spots for odor. Cats have reputations for being fastidious. This means they don’t want to use a smelly litterbox any more than you would want to use a smelly toilet.
